SEO Pricing: Retainers vs. Hourly and How to Spot Cheap SEO
SEO pricing usually comes in one of three forms: a monthly retainer, an hourly rate, or a one-time project like an audit. Our SEO is a flat monthly retainer with a public price, so you know the cost before you ever get on a call.
SEO prices vary a lot, and that makes it hard to tell a fair deal from a bad one. This guide explains how agencies charge, what you should get for your money, and how to spot cheap SEO before it costs you.
How do agencies price SEO?
Most SEO is sold in one of these ways:
- Monthly retainer: a fixed fee each month for an agreed set of work.
- Hourly billing: you pay for the time spent, often with a monthly estimate.
- One-time project: a fixed price for a set job, such as an audit or a site migration.
- Pay for results: you pay only when certain rankings are reached.
Pay-for-results sounds safe, but be careful. Rankings move up and down, and an agency paid per ranking may chase easy keywords that bring no leads.
Retainer vs. hourly: which is better?
For most small businesses, a fixed retainer is easier to plan around. Hourly billing can work for small, one-off fixes. Here's how they compare:
| Monthly retainer | Hourly billing | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost each month | Fixed and known up front | Changes with the hours logged |
| What you get | An agreed list of work | Whatever fits in the time |
| Who carries the risk | The agency, if work takes longer | You, if work takes longer |
| Best for | Ongoing SEO that builds over months | Small, one-off tasks |
| Watch out for | Vague lists of "ongoing optimization" | Slow work that bills more |
Hourly billing rewards slow work instead of finished work. That's why we don't use it. A good retainer fixes both the price and the work, in writing.
What should an SEO retainer include?
A fair retainer lists real deliverables, not just "optimization." Look for work you can see and check:
- New pages each month, such as service or location pages
- Google Business Profile work, like posts, photos and review replies
- Technical fixes, such as broken pages, redirects and speed problems
- Link building through real partners, suppliers and local press
- A monthly report on rankings, calls and form leads
If a proposal can't tell you what gets done each month, you can't tell whether it's working.
How do you spot cheap SEO?
Cheap SEO isn't just low-priced SEO. It's SEO that costs you more later, through wasted months or even a Google penalty. Google lists its own warning signs for hiring an SEO. Watch for these:
- Guaranteed #1 rankings. Google says no one can guarantee a #1 ranking. Anyone who does is guessing or lying.
- Hundreds of backlinks for a low fee. Bought links and private blog networks break Google's spam policies.
- Secret methods. If they won't explain what they do, assume you wouldn't like the answer.
- No access to your own data. You should own your Google Search Console and Google Business Profile accounts.
- Traffic-only reports. Traffic that never calls you isn't worth paying for.
- Long lock-in contracts. A 12-month contract keeps you paying even when the work isn't paying off.
- Keyword stuffing. Pages crammed with the same phrase read badly and can hurt your rankings.
Why do SEO prices vary so much?
Some price differences are fair. A plumber in one small town needs less work than a law firm in a big city. The main things that change the price are:
- How many competitors you have and how strong they are
- How many locations or service areas you cover
- How big your site is and what shape it's in
- How much new content you need each month
Search data shows why good SEO is worth paying for. Semrush puts the cost per click for "seo services" at $28.50. That's what advertisers pay for a single visit, which shows how valuable buyers in that market are. A page that ranks without ads earns those visits for free.

What else do people ask?
How much should a small business spend on SEO?
It depends on your market and how much a new client is worth to you. Start by working out what one extra lead a month is worth. If an audit shows clear problems, fix those first before paying for a monthly plan.
Is cheap SEO ever worth it?
A low price is fine if the work is real and clearly listed. The danger is low-priced SEO that relies on bought links or vague promises. That kind of work can cost you rankings you'll then pay to win back.
How long does SEO take to pay off?
Google's own guide says SEO usually takes four months to a year to show results. A good agency will show you steady progress in monthly reports before the bigger wins arrive.
