How to Choose an SEO Agency: 7 Questions to Ask Before You Hire

Quick Answer: Ask who does the work, how they get links, how they report, whether they guarantee rankings, what it costs, who owns your accounts, and what happens in the first 30 days. Hire the agency that gives plain, specific answers, and walk away from anyone who promises a number one ranking or dodges the price.

Most bad SEO deals look fine on the first call. The pitch is smooth. The deck is nice. The problems show up months later, when you can't tell what you paid for.

The fix is simple. Ask every agency the same seven questions, and compare the answers side by side.

What should an SEO agency do for a small business?

A good SEO agency helps the right local customers find you on Google, trust you, and call or book. That usually means fixing technical problems on your site, writing clear pages for each service, keeping your Google Business Profile active, and earning honest links. You can see how we do this on our SEO services page.

If an agency can't explain what it will do in plain words, that is your first answer.

How do you choose the right SEO agency?

You choose the right SEO agency by asking direct questions and listening for direct answers. Vague answers are a warning. So is pressure to sign today.

Here are the seven questions to ask before hiring an SEO agency. Use them on every call, including a call with us. Our answers are further down, and the details of each plan are on our SEO services page.

1. Who actually does the work, and can I talk to them?

Why it matters: The person who sells you SEO is often not the person who does it. If you can't reach the person doing the work, small problems turn into big ones.

Good answer: "Here is the name of the person who will write your pages and fix your site. You can book a call with them."

Red-flag answer: "Your account manager will pass it along to the team." If they can't name who does the work, you won't know who to hold to account.

2. Do you use PBNs or buy links?

Why it matters: PBNs are private blog networks. They are groups of sites built only to link to other sites. Google's spam policies treat link schemes like these, and bought links, as spam. A site that uses them can lose rankings.

Good answer: "No. We earn links from real places, like local partners, suppliers and press."

Red-flag answer: "We have a network we use," or "We'll get you hundreds of links fast." Fast, cheap links are often the kind that can hurt you.

3. How do you report results?

Why it matters: Rankings are nice, but they don't pay your bills. Calls, form leads and bookings do.

Good answer: "Each month you get a report on rankings, calls and form leads, and we explain what changed and why."

Red-flag answer: A long report full of charts and keyword positions, with no mention of calls or leads. If they only report rankings, ask why.

4. Can you guarantee a number one ranking?

Why it matters: No agency controls Google. Google's own guidance on hiring an SEO says no one can guarantee a number one ranking on Google.

Good answer: "No. Here is what we will do, and here is how we will measure progress."

Red-flag answer: "Yes, we guarantee page one." That promise tells you the agency is willing to say things that aren't true to close a sale.

5. What does it cost, and what's in the contract?

Why it matters: Hidden prices and long contracts make it hard to leave if the work isn't good. For a full breakdown of fair prices, read what small business SEO costs.

Good answer: "Our prices are published. The plan is month-to-month, and you can cancel with a short notice period."

Red-flag answer: "It depends, let's get on a call," followed by a long contract with a large fee to leave early.

6. Who owns my website, domain, Google Business Profile and accounts?

Why it matters: If the agency owns your accounts, leaving them can mean losing your site, your reviews or your domain.

Good answer: "You do. Everything is set up in your name. We get access to do the work, and you keep the keys."

Red-flag answer: "We set it all up under our account to make things easier." Easier for them, not for you.

7. What will you do in the first 30 days?

Why it matters: Good SEO starts by finding out what is broken. Big changes made without a plan can do more harm than good.

Good answer: "We start with an audit and give you a written plan before we make big changes."

Red-flag answer: "We'll rebuild your site right away," or no clear answer at all.

Why do big agencies struggle with some of these questions?

A 200-person agency isn't bad. Many do good work, and some businesses need a large team. But big agencies are built for scale, and that shape makes questions 1, 3 and 5 harder to answer well.

Question 1 (who does the work): At a large agency, you often talk to a salesperson first. Then you are handed to an account manager. The person who writes your pages or fixes your site is often someone you never meet. Each handoff is a place where details get lost.

Question 3 (reporting): Large agencies serve many clients at once, so reports are often built from one template for everyone. The template may show rankings and traffic but miss the calls and leads that matter to your business.

Question 5 (cost and contract): Big teams have big costs, so many big agencies use custom quotes and longer contracts. That isn't always a bad deal. It just makes prices hard to compare before you talk to sales.

So ask these questions just as firmly, and expect clear answers.

How does Vexel Growth answer all 7 questions?

We are a two-person team, so here are our answers, including the limits. You can read more about us on our about page.

  1. Who does the work: Paritosh Parhe does the SEO and writes your pages. Nishad More builds and deploys sites. There are no account managers and no handoffs. You talk to the people doing the work.
  2. PBNs and bought links: We don't use them. Link building on our Growth plan comes from local partners, suppliers and press.
  3. Reporting: Our Local Starter plan includes a monthly report on rankings, calls and form leads. Our Growth plan adds call tracking and a monthly strategy call.
  4. Guarantees: No. We won't promise a number one ranking, because no one can.
  5. Cost and contract: Every price is on our pricing page. Local Starter is $797 a month and Growth is $1,497 a month. SEO plans are month-to-month with no contract, and you can cancel with 14 days' notice. If you choose an optional annual plan, it's billed upfront at a 10-month rate, and it can't be cancelled early for a prorated refund.
  6. Ownership: Our hosting setup is done in your name. On a Custom Next.js build, you get the full source code at launch. For your Google Business Profile, we'd tell any client to keep the owner role and give the agency manager access.
  7. The first 30 days: If you want to start with a plan, our SEO Audit is $397 one-time. It includes a technical crawl, a review of your 10 most important pages, a ranked fix list and a 30-minute call. That ranked fix list is your written plan.

Our limits, honestly:

  • Two people can only take on so many clients at once. Sometimes we may have to say "not yet."
  • We don't have a round-the-clock team.
  • We are based in India. We work with small businesses in the US, UK, Canada and Australia, and we book calls at a time in your time zone.

Frequently asked questions

What questions should I ask before hiring an SEO agency?

Ask who does the work, whether they use PBNs or buy links, how they report results, whether they guarantee rankings, what it costs, who owns your accounts, and what they will do in the first 30 days.

What are the biggest SEO agency red flags?

A guaranteed number one ranking, bought links or private blog networks, reports with rankings but no calls or leads, hidden prices, long contracts, and accounts set up in the agency's name instead of yours.

Should an SEO agency guarantee results?

No. Google's own guidance on hiring an SEO says no one can guarantee a number one ranking. A good agency explains what it will do and how it will measure progress.

Should I sign a long-term SEO contract?

You don't have to. Look for published prices, month-to-month terms and a short notice period. Our SEO plans are month-to-month, and you can cancel with 14 days' notice.
